Former coach Fabio Capello says Italian football is trying to copy Pep Guardiola’s style of play, but it’s 10 years behind.

    In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capello spoke about how the Italian club used to dominate European football with their pressing and central defence, but then started copying Pep Guardiola’s style – but 10 years too late – and this is what happened.

    “We were already slower than the others and our possession was not as good. The ball moved slowly and often lacked consistency,” Capello said.

    “This approach doesn’t get us anywhere in the Euros and could hurt us in continental competitions, Spain is all about possession and drilling in the middle.”

    “Pep Guardiola’s Man City keep the ball with them, but they do it in the opposition’s half, not in front of the penalty area like we see in Serie A.”
